3 years on, 29,000 tribal students finally get allowance

Nisha Nambiar, The Indian Express, Pune, March 27, 2015

After three years and contempt of court orders issued by the High Court, the tribal department finally claims to have cleared the monthly allowances for as many as 28,944 tribal students in the state.

The department submitted an affidavit on March 24 — almost within a week after the court threatened to issue contempt orders — saying it has cleared dues with arrears to the eligible students residing in government tribal hostels. The hostels are run by the tribal development department. […]

It has cleared dues of 5,070 students from Nashik division, 9,643 students from Thane division, 10,296 students from Nagpur division and 3,935 students from Amravati division.

“After three long years, the department has finally paid the allowance with arrears, much to the respite of the students staying in the hostels. It is sad that one has to approach courts for these rightful dues,” said applicant Ravindra Talpe.

Hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by a Pune-based organisation, the HC had in its March 11 order directed the department to pay allowances to all eligible students by February 28.
