SANTAL LITERARY MEET: SANTAL ONOLIA HELMEL 2017
Tribal Literature in the Changing World
Date: yet to be decided (postponed from 6-7 January 2017)
Johar HRD Centre, Dumka, Jharkhand, India
Concept Note
“The more things change, the more things remain the same.”
This seminar will focus on issues of continuity and change in the context of Adivasi/ tribal/ indigenous literature. It was earlier thought that Oral Tradition – folk and tribal narratives like myth, folktale, folksong, beast fable, riddle etc – died away under the impact of globalization. This view is no longer acceptable since it is found that many oral narratives live on in other forms of modern mass media such as radio, television, cinema etc. Popular superheroes on television and cinema are often based on the roles played by traditional heroes in folktales, beast fables and other oral forms. Hence, mass media may have changed the boundaries of entertainment but it has not erased the contents.
The main objective of this seminar will be to examine these questions:
- Is storytelling a ‘public’ form that exists outside the home and family?
- How does mass media change the role of the traditional tribal storyteller?
- Is the ‘purity’ of tribal folklore destroyed when transmitted through mass media?
- Is it viable for migrant tribal families in urban areas to continue and preserve their tradition through storytelling at home?
- What role does the audience/ listener/ reader play in the process of retelling of tribal oral tradition?
- How is modern storytelling in tribal societies influenced by market forces or by political and ideological changes?
