We work on tourism in natural spaces such as forests, coasts, and hills and mountains. These natural spaces, are primarily home to people who have an interdependent relationship with their environment, and these natural resources support innumerable livelihoods in such regions. With this perspective, we critically examine the effects of tourism and related policies on the environment and the local communities.

Nitin Yeshwantrao, Thane: Blessed with abundant natural and cultural attractions, Thane district’s untapped potential as one big tourism destination will soon be unveiled in a comprehensive tourism master plan, according to officials.
The massive mission to identify tourist spots and suggest new initiatives in cultural, adventure and eco-tourism areas is said to have been completed and a detailed report has been submitted to the district collectorate recently.
The entire exercise was aimed to spot the hidden tourism locales, identify the infrastructure gaps and suggest the funding sources from government and the private sector. The objective was to popularize Thane as a major tourism hub with a view to provide employment and facilitate income-generation for the locals,” said a senior district official.
Private consultants, who are on the panel of the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), are said to have listed out more than 40 tourist locations, which would be a huge draw considering Thane’s proximity to Mumbai and better infrastructure facilities. […]

With innovative marketing strategy and improved infrastructure, the tourism industry would result in creating of 3.17 lakh jobs.

“People from the adivasi pockets of Jawahar, Mokhada, Talasari will not have to migrate to the big cities in search of employment. Thane district is very diverse and has rich cultural heritage, a huge forest, a beach front and popular religious spots like Titwala temple, Biral Temple etc. All that is required is to have a strategy plan and implementation will to project the district as a tourist spot,” he added.
