A cultural heritage worth preserving for tribals and non-tribals alike: Celebrating man’s relationship with nature – India’s Tribal festivals

Times of India, Bhopal, March 5, 2014

BHOPAL: For Madhav Shah, a 65-year-old retired government servant, the recently concluded Aranya Naad tribal dance festival was an opportunity to get closer to nature. The festival celebrated man’s relationship with nature with each dance depicting a story on how with each passing day man is forgetting his traditional legacy, said Shah. The three-day tribal dance festival ‘Aranya Naad-3’ concluded here at Manav Sangrahalaya on Monday with tribal groups of 11 states participating in the festival.

According to Richa Arora, 25, a resident of Ayodhya Nagar, tribal dance represents heritage and culture. “I am mesmerized with their performance and how closely they are to their customs and heritage. […]

Rajesh Tank, a 23-year-old student of fine arts said, the costumes they wore were very colourful and bright representing colours of five elements of nature. For Amit Kant, 21, dance forms taught how to respect and conserve nature.”

A three-day tribal festival, ‘An Extravaganza of Ethnic Music and Dance Festival’ began at the Gandhi maidan in Madikeri on Monday with more than 25 different tribal troupes from across the nation taking part in it. The festival was launched by team leaders of the troupes.

The event is being organised by Prasar Bharati All India Radio, Madikeri, and the South Zone Culture Centre, the Department of Culture, Government of India, Tanjavur. Participating in the programme, Umashankar, official from the South Zone Culture Centre, Tanjavur, said similar shows were held in seven different parts of the country. It would help showcase the tribal culture and introduce them to people.

Deputy Director of the Madikeri Station of All India Radio (AIR) Indira Yesupriya Gajaraj said this would be an effort to preserve the ethnic culture of tribal people, who lived in poor conditions in forests. The festival would help the local tribal groups to come up with their traditions and enable them to mingle with other tribal groups and exchange views. The AIR was doing its best to instil knowledge among the tribal groups by broadcasting several programmes concerning them.

The programme was aimed at improving the quality of life of the tribal people, said Abdul Rasheed, Programme Executive of the Madikeri AIR, on the occasion. The cultural exchange would help each group to realise the diversities existing in tribal cultures, Mr. Rasheed said. Another official from the AIR, Madikeri, Nagendra, stated that tribal music and dance festivals were being organised by Prasar Bharati for three years providing a common platform for adivasis to perform.
