The Tribal Foundation distributed horticulture saplings to the Kaani tribal people in the Vellambi tribal settlement in the western ghats on September 8.
Speaking at the function, S S Davidson, environmental educator said that the climatic condition in the hills and mountains and the rain from the monsoons are congenial to raise horticultural trees in the area. The fruit trees would help to raise their income, besides they could get fresh, organic fruits for their own use.
The tribal people live in deep forests and jungles in the Western Ghats in Kanyakumari district. They depend on agro-forestry is the jungles. They are living below the poverty line and have very low economic, educational level. To support their agricultural activities and to augment their economy through agricultural operation, the Foundation distributed free hybrid saplings of mango, guava, sapota and cashew nut to the tribal people.
