A 30-minute documentary, ‘Snehasanthi,’ made by a group of tribal youths under the banner of the Kerala Adivasi Students Forum tells the story of why the tribal youth make a ‘retreat’ from education, especially the Paniya, Adiya and Kattunayakka sections.
Though a lot of projects have been implemented by successive governments to provide education to tribal people, it could not make a considerable change in their outlook towards education so far, says director of the documentary Ajay of the Chembily Adiya colony at Panamaram in Wayanad.
Funds and projects alone would not make any positive change in the attitude of marginalised sections towards education; instead they need active support and a positive approach of the so-called modern society, he adds. “We are planning to screen the documentary in all tribal colonies in the district,” he said. Except the cameraman, all 23 actors and the technicians are from different tribal communities in the district. The documentary has been produced by the Neethivedi, an non-governmental organisation. The script is by P. Ajay, lyrics by Sukumaran of the Chaligaddha Adiya Colony and the camera is cranked by Praful George.

Ask a question that includes “tribal” or “Adivasi”, for instance: “Adivasi way of life better?” (or “tribal way of life worse?”)
Specify any particular issue or news item (biodiversity, bonded labour and human trafficking, climate change, ecology, economic development, ethnobotany, ethnomedicine, global warming, hunter-gatherers in a particular region or state, prevention of rural poverty, water access).
For official figures include “scheduled tribe ST” along with a union state or region: e.g. “Chhattisgarh ST community”, “Himalayan tribe”, “Scheduled tribe Tamil Nadu census”, “ST Kerala census”, “Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group Jharkhand”, “PVTG Rajasthan”, “Adivasi ST Kerala”, “Adibasi ST West Bengal” etc.
