Documentary film “The Truth about Tigers” screened in tribal communities – Karnataka

A film maker considers tribal communities’ rights

The Hindu, Bangalore, September 7, 2012

[…] The documentary, titled The Truth about Tigers was made in English.

It has since been translated to Hindi, Marathi, Tamil and Kannada.

“It has been screened widely around the country, particularly in villages and tribal settlements in central India,” Mr. Dattatri said.

The conflict

The film focuses on the decline of the tiger population in India’s forests, the conflict between conservation and tribal communities’ rights, the issue of poaching and loose monitoring that has led to a steep decline in the numbers of tigers. […]

Multiple efforts

The 40-minute documentary educates viewers on conservation even as it delves on solutions, including a scientific approach to conservation, emphasis on citizen effort and building political will, and ensuring resettlement of tribal communities in tiger habitat.

The screening was attended by theatre personality Arundhati Nag, retired bureaucrat Chiranjeev Singh and conservationist Ullas Karanth. […]

Mr. Singh dwelt on the issue of poaching saying it was endemic not only in the country but also across the world. “People and policymakers at all levels should take it seriously.”

A tiger reserve for Tamil Nadu

The Hindu, Erode, July 8, 2012

Tribal people living in the reserve forests will not be re-located when Sathyamangalam becomes a tiger reserve, Forest Minister K.T. Pachamal has promised.

Inspecting the development works being carried out in different parts of Sathyamangalam and Thalavadi blocks on Friday, the Minister said that the government had proposed to create a tiger reserve in Sathyamangalam forests as the population of the big cats in this part of the State was found healthy.

Responding to the apprehensions raised by the tribal people, political parties and various other organisations, the Minister said the government would not ask the tribal people to shift their residence if an exclusive protection zone was created for the tigers. The government, however, would provide all necessary assistance to those willing to re-locate from the forest areas.

Mr. Pachamal also assured them that the creation of tiger reserve would not affect the collection of minor forest produce. Forest dwellers could continue to collect forest produce and sell them. […]
