Strategy for achieving bio-diversity conservation and greening to ensure livelihood of the tribal people – Tamil Nadu

Efforts are on to develop a village-wise micro plan and strategy for achieving bio-diversity conservation and greening to ensure livelihood of the tribal people, District Forest Officer, Coimbatore, V. Thirunavukkarasu said on Wednesday.

He was talking to The Hindu on the sidelines of a workshop on Ecologically Sustainable Development for Forest Officials and field staff on the theme “Tamil Nadu Bio-diversity conservation and Greening Project”.  […]

The bio-diversity conservation and greening project will be implemented over the next seven years.

This time, the main focus will be on greening of reserve forest and livelihood of tribal people towards conservation initiative.

There were 33 tribal hamlets for which much had not been done so far. Of the 33 tribal villages, 10 were in Coimbatore and the rest in nine divisions. Forest officials and field staff from those areas attended the workshop. […]

Without poverty alleviation, conservation would become a distant dream. The topics deliberated at the workshop included practical planning for tribal livelihood and promoting micro-enterprises. […]
