What started as a month-long event on November 10, the Kollam Fest, under way at the Asramam Maidan in Kollam, is poised to have an extended run till January. Given the growing response to it from the people, the organisers see much potential in the Christmas-New Year vacation to attract more visitors.

R. Appukuttan Kanivaidyan from Peringamala in Thiruvananthapuram district, an Adivasi traditional medicine practitioner, is camping at the venue to showcase the healing power of herbs collected from the Agasthyamala biosphere. Facilities have been set up for his classic steam therapy. For book lovers, the festival venue is a wonderland, with a separate wing of over a dozen stalls selling books for all age groups and virtually on all subjects. One of the biggest attractions of the festival is the amusement park.
The organisers report that children and elders alike have a taken a liking to it. In fact, a big majority of them return only after enjoying a few rides.
From the proceeds earned from the festival, the organisers intend to set up a heritage museum in the city and create a fund to help cancer patients and rehabilitate destitute senior citizens.
