Video | Chenchu hunter-gatherers: An Ethnographic film by Sathya Mohan – Andhra Pradesh

This award-winning ethnographic documentary film made by Sathya Mohan PV, deals with the socio-economic and religious life of the Chenchus, the only Telugu speaking prehistoric hunting-gathering tribe living in the Nallamalai forests of Andhra Pradesh, India. They are a conservative tribal group and have not made many changes in their lifestyle or tried to adapt to modernity. They live in the enclosed space and geography leading a life of an unbroken continuity.

I am an ethnographic filmmaker engaged in visually exploring and documenting the fast disappearing tribal and rural traditions of India. Apart from anthropology, I am into metaphysics and shamanism investigating the nature of Multiverse and the contemporary crisis of planet Earth. The Chenchus are one of the last remaining tribes in India. They live a hand-to-mouth existence in the forest but attempts to integrate them in society have failed. For centuries, the Chenchus have survived as hunter-gatherers. They have no food preservation techniques and no interest in material wealth. But the Chenchus’ traditional forest homeland has recently been declared a tiger sanctuary. Attempts to turn the Chenchus into farmers failed. They refuse to leave their forest and are struggling to adapt to new lifestyles.
