Call for Support: Adivaani—Publishing the Adivasi Voice

Adivaani is a new publishing house from Kolkata, which describes itself as a response to the endangered Adivasi cultural and historical heritage. For long, mainstream publishing in India has neglected the documentation and publication of Adivasi languages and culture, except perhaps in the academic discussions of subaltern studies. The Adivasi voice, embedded in numerous oral history traditions and rituals, has not had a platform for publication. Adivaani hopes to be exactly that much-needed avenue.

The founders were inspired by the stories of publishing houses like Kali for Women and Navayana, which focused on unrepresented voices, women and Dalit respectively. The founders of Adivaani also wish to create a pan-Indian publishing house, for all indigenous people of India. […]

The founders of Adivaani—Ruby Hembrom, Joy Tudu and Luis A. Gómez—have turned to crowdsourcing, and have sent out a call for support, to raise funds for their endeavour. Their target is $5000 (Rs 2.7 lakhs approx.), and funds raised would go to “publish books of contemporary Indigenous writers on the ‘politics’ of being an Adivasi in India, the situation of Adivasis in India and their pertinent issues through the eyes of Adivasis.”
